Cats and Wet Food

Our cat friends need to have approximately 1 ounce of water for every 1 pound they weigh for their daily moisture intake. So, your typical 8 pound house cat would need to drink 8 ounces of water a day to stay properly hydrated. Since cats simply do not drink water as much as dogs, keeping cats hydrated can be a bit of a challenge. One of the best ways to keep your cat’s moisture levels up is by feeding wet foods, such as cans, pouches and raw on a daily basis. These foods are swimming in moisture from the natural water content in fresh meats, as well as the gravy in cans and pouches! As a bonus, cats tend to drink more water when they eat wet foods too.

Finding a wet food that your cat likes can also be a bit of a challenge. There are nearly as many different types of wet food varieties as there are different types of cats! Here are a few tips for feeding your cat the wet food they want and need.

Sauce on the side – cats can be very particular not only with their tastes, but their textures as well. Keep wet and dry foods in separate dishes.

Good gravy! – Pate’ doesn’t make your cat purr? Try a chunky stew recipe from a can, or a pouch of wet food. Pouches typically have higher gravy content in them and are loaded with moisture.

Think outside of the can – Your cat doesn’t have to be limited to cans and pouches. If they are not ready for raw either, bone broths and goat milk are great moisture additions to their diet that are also full of flavor!
