Raw Food in the Pet World

Poke’ and sushi bar options have recently gained popularity here in St. Louis. Raw food has also gained interest in the pet food world as well. Raw is considered one of the most natural diet for pets, as it is free of preservatives and heavy processing. Raw foods are naturally high in meat protein and low in carbohydrates, making them ideal for pets with food allergies and sensitivities.
Allyson Mace, founder of Sauce Magazine, feeds her dog, Edie, Primal’s Frozen Raw Pork Formula. Allyson prefers to feed raw because of the “quality… dogs should be fed closest to their natural type of food. I feel that the food she is fed helps her with any type of food allergy issues and her body processes the food as it is intended to do.”

Raw food for pets consists of uncooked meats, fruits and vegetables, as well as a balance of vitamins and minerals. These ingredients are carefully blended to provide optimum nutrition for your pet. One large difference between the raw meat used for pet food and what you might find at your grocer is that some raw foods like Primal have undergone a cold press/HPP safety step to eliminate the possibility of pathogens like salmonella.

When feeding raw food for your pet, Treats Unleashed recommends you know the three S’s – Source, Safety, and Schedule.

Source: When feeding raw food for your pet, Treats Unleashed recommends choosing a trusted brand that offers complete, balanced nutrition, humane sourcing and has regulated safety measures in place.

Safety: Serve in a non-porous dish, and clean all surfaces and wash hands after handling raw pet food.

Schedule: Raw foods are frozen solid when you purchase them. Do a bit of food prep and portion out meals into individual bags and plan ahead to properly thaw before serving.

Much like sushi, raw food isn’t for everyone. Want to discuss some raw options for your pet? Visit a Treats Unleashed shop to see what’s available for your pet with a pet food expert.
